    The Newcastle Castle was first fortified more than 1800 years ago. The first fortification was done by the Romans when it was known as fort of Pons Aelius. The site was then used variously up until 1080 when Robert the son of William the Conqueror built the first castle at the site. The Newcastle Castle was opened to the public in 2015 after extensive renovations. It is a great place to enjoy history and learn.
